ABSTRACT

In this study, biodegradable films using a blend of cocoyam (Xanthsoma sagittifolium) starch, hydroxyapatite, glycerol, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics was developed. Hydroxyapatite, synthesized through a chemical method, was incorporated to enhance the films strength and nutritional content. Various concentration of hydroxyapatite were mixed with starch to prepare films, which were evaluated for properties such as biodegradability, water vapor permeability, thickness, anti-microbial resistance (anti-fungal and anti-bacterial sensitivity) and mechanical property (tensile strength and elongation at break). The results showed differences in film properties including thickness (0.073mm to 0.090mm), tensile strength (0.0681kg/mm2 to 0.1790kg/mm2 ) and elongation at break (27.9% to 35.0%). Water vapor permeability ranged from (1.05g/mm.hr to 0.33g/mm.hr) over a period of 1-4hrs. The films exhibited no antimicrobial effects but demonstrated complete biodegradability within 14days, suggesting their potential as sustainable plastic alternatives.
