ABSTRACT

This research project focused on the synthesis of 4- methyl amine quinoline-N-oxide and involved a series of chemical transformations, including the synthesis of quinoline-N-oxide, 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide, 4-chloroquinoline-N-oxide, and ultimately, the target compound, 4- methyl amine quinoline-N-oxide. Each synthesis step was meticulously executed, and the obtained compounds were characterized based on their observed properties. The synthesis of quinoline-N-oxide commenced with the distillation of quinoline to obtain pure quinoline, followed by N-oxidation through the addition of anhydrous acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Distillation and neutralization processes were employed to isolate quinoline-N-oxide. Subsequently, chloroform extraction and further distillation led to the purification of the compound. The synthesis of 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide involved the nitration of quinoline-N-oxide with sulfuric acid and potassium nitrate. The resulting 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide was filtered, recrystallized from acetone, and dried to obtain pure crystals. 4-chloroquinoline-N-oxide was synthesized by reacting 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide with hydrochloric acid, followed by neutralization with sodium hydroxide. The product, 4-chloroquinoline-N-oxide, was obtained by filtration and drying. Finally, the synthesis of 4- methyl amine quinoline-N-oxide was achieved by replacing the chloro-group in 4-chloroquinoline-N-oxide with methyl amine. The resulting product was neutralized, filtered, dried, and weighed. The observed properties of each compound were recorded, including color, odor, physical state, melting point, solubility, and Rf values.
