ABSTRACT

Quinoline and its derivatives has become an important compound because of its variety of applications in medicinal and synthetic organic chemistry as well as in the field of pharmaceutical chemistry. In recent years, there are greater societal expectations that chemists should produce greener and more economic chemical processes. The synthesis of 4-chloroquinoline-N-oxide, a three-step reaction, started with the oxidation of freshly distilled quinoline to quinoline-N-oxide, followed by the nitration reaction using (KNO3/H2SO4), then proceeds to the acidic neutralization of the nitrated quinoline-N-oxide to yield the target compound, 4-chloroquinoline-N-oxide. Furthermore, the physical properties such as melting point, retention factor (Rf), and solubility of the intermediate compounds and the target compound were determined. Therefore, the methods of synthesizing the compound and its purification were very successful and economically feasible except that the starting material was expensive.  .
