ABSTRACT
The synthesis of 2,5-dimethyl-4-methoxybenzene sulphonyl-l-proline is a 3 step phase reaction. The process started with the synthesis of 2,5-dimethylanisole which was prepared by reacting 2,5-dimethylphenol with dimethylsulphate in the presence of sodium hydroxide solution. Secondly, chlorosulphonylation of the 2,5-dimethylanisole which was carried out by reacting 2,5-dimethylanisole with distilled chlorosulphonic acid to obtain 2,5-dimethyl-4-methoxybenzene sulfonylchloride. Thirdly, the product from the second synthesis was then coupled with l-proline in the presence of a sodium hydroxide solution to obtain the product of interest, 2,5-dimethyl-4-methoxybenzene sulphonyl-l-proline. Lastly, the compounds formed were characterized in terms of their physical properties such as molecular weight, boiling/melting point and retention factor.
