ABSTRACT
In this study, Zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method to form binary oxides and nanocomposites with carbonized Hibiscus Sabdariffa (commonly used for Zobo drink in Nigeria). The synthesized ZnOcarbonized hibiscus waste nanocomposite (ZnOCZWNC), MgO-carbonized hibiscus waste nanocomposite, (MgOCZWNC) and MgO-ZnO binary oxide nanocomposite (MgZBO) were characterized using the FT-IR Spectroscopy to confirm the presence of each nanocomposite, XRay Diffractometer to confirm their crystalline sizes and SEM microscope to confirm morphology. The synthesized nanocomposites (ZnOCZWNC, MgOCZWNC and MgZBO) were then used as adsorbents for removing heavy metals (cadmium, nickel and lead) under different optimum conditions (parameters) (such as contact time, pH, initial concentration and adsorbent dosage) and their efficiency was analysed. Adsorption isotherm studies were carried out mathematical using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The Antibacterial activity of the three (3) synthesized nanocomposites (ZnOCZWNC, MgOCZWNC and MgZBO) was studied using turbidimetric method against Salmonella typhi-gram positive and Staphylococcus aureus-gram negative bacteria in contaminated water.
