 ABSTRACT

A three-step synthetic approach to indole derivative was carried out. First, the starting compound, indole was reacted with a potassium iodide/iodine mixture to obtain 3-iodo indole. Second, the iodo-indole reacted with thiourea to yield indole isothiouranium iodide. In a 10% sodium hydroxide solution under a hydrogen atmosphere, indole isothiouranium iodide yielded indole-3-thiol. Third, the reaction mixture was coupled with chloroacetic acid and precipitated using concentrated hydrochloric acid to give indole-3-thioacetic acid. Subsequently, the synthesized compounds were physically characterized in terms of solubility, retention factor, and melting point after each step. The synthesized compounds showed characteristic physical features which were recorded but further characterization would be needed to ascertain the structures of the compounds.
