ABSTRACT

Hydroxyapatite has long been among the most studied biomaterials in the medical field for both its proven biocompatibility and for being the main constituent of the mineral part of bone and teeth. Hydroxyapatite is also an important source of calcium and phosphate and it can also be prepared from natural sources such as eggshells, chicken bones and also fish bone and they are used as the template. The recently developed interest for nanotechnology in many fields, is producing interesting and imminent applications for synthesizing nano-hydroxyapatite, which presents crystals ranging in size between 1 to100 nm.Besides, nano-hydroxyapatite also acts as filler because it repairs small holes and depressions on enamel surface, a function enhanced by the small size of the particles that compose it. Hydroxyapatite in this study was prepared using calcium nitrate and diammonium hydrogen phosphate as the main component and adipic acid as a template and this was done through precipitation method with the aim to produce a nanostructured hydroxyapatite . It was prepared under two different pHs and characterized using SEM.The results showed that it had different morphologies at the different pHs.
