ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to analyse the effect of biomass on coal when they are blended for a better and more efficient way of utilizing coal. Coal samples. The coal sample was blended with sawdust at various mixing proportions of 0:100, 30:70, 50:50, 30:70 and 100:0 sawdust. Proximate and ultimate analyses were carried out to ascertain the elemental composition of the raw materials and the coal biomass. The heating (calorific) value and fuel ratio of the samples at different blending ratios were also estimated. The 70:30 and 50:50 blends were classified as high-energy blends and this was done using the Van Krevelen plot. This study revealed that the addition of biomass in coal led to an increase in the desirable and a decrease in the undesirable quality of coal making the coal-biomass blend suitable as a substitute for raw coal in coal utilization as it gives a cleaner synergy.
