SUMMARY
In Osofisan’s The Album of the Midnight Blackout, the playwright uses symbolic characters and setting to x-ray the economic and socio-political realities of contemporary Nigeria. It uses satire and humour to attack the ills of decadence in our society. This essay has examined the ills of decadence and also suggested how it can be reduced or eradicated.
The Album of the Midnight Blackout is a satire that exposes and ridicules the views and follies of particular sectors of the Nigerian society. Osofisan employs satire to put his message across. The humour in the play has in no way reduced the seriousness of the criticism of immorality. We note that the satire in the play is a subtle one used to show that most Nigerians are guilty of economic, moral, sexual and political corruption and decadence as demonstrated by some of the characters in the play. The playwright implies that the issues of moral degeneration has become so prevalent and persistent that Nigerians have now come to view this situation as normal.
