ABSTRACT

The sustainable management of healthcare waste is a pressing issue due to the potential negative impacts that improperly disposed waste can have on the environment and public health. In addition, the proper handling of healthcare waste can also help reduce costs for healthcare facilities. Few of the major methods for achieving sustainable management of healthcare waste is through the implementation of a waste segregation system, Recycling, Treatments, Reuse. This involves separating different types of waste, such as infectious and hazardous materials, and properly disposing of each type through appropriate channels. This can include the use of autoclaves for sterilization and the use of specialized disposal companies for certain types of waste, To achieve this a mix of closed-ended and open-ended questions was designed as questionnaire in accordance with the objective of this project with a specific target population which includes professionals such as doctors, nurses, administrators and Environmentalists. From the results obtained, findings show that 60 percent of waste Generated is plastics, 24 percent is papers, 10 percent Sharps and 6 percent body tissues, the paper and plastic waste can be consider as non-hazardous or general waste and this amount to 84 percent. Cost estimation of healthcare waste management is also calculated including capacity of incineration plants and average and maximum infectious incinerated
