ABSTRACT

This study delves into the challenges and opportunities surrounding sustainable practices and waste reduction within the construction industry. Surveying professionals in the field, the research sheds light on their attitudes, perceptions, and practices related to sustainable construction materials and waste management. Data used for this study was collected via questionnaires using a cross sectional descriptive survey method and an observational check list as well as a brief interview with the construction professionals such as Engineers, architects, Estate Managers, Consultants, Builders etc. having three to ten years of experience. The responses were analyzed by percentages and results were presented in tables and charts using the Microsoft Excel software. The findings reveal a significant preference for buildings constructed with sustainable materials, with 40% strongly indicating this preference. However, there is a striking lack of awareness regarding available sustainable options, as only few respondents consider themselves knowledgeable about such materials. Cost concerns are prominent. Technological limitations also pose challenges, with 51% of professionals strongly agreeing that they impede the efficient implementation of sustainable construction practices. Despite these obstacles, there is a growing recognition of the importance of government policies, with 73% acknowledging the crucial role of government support in encouraging the use of sustainable materials. Efforts to minimize waste generation and manage construction waste effectively are considered vital. Virtually all respondents agree that sorting and recycling of construction waste materials are effective methods for reducing environmental impact. Additionally, 90% strongly agree that a lack of awareness and education is a significant challenge in promoting sustainable practices
