ABSTRACT
Overtime, the environment has come to play a major defining role in the existence of man, not just man alone, but even everything that has life within the sphere in which the environment in itself covers. Through research and everyday life, it has been shown that it is difficult to separate or even draw a wide dichotomy between the overall impact of the environment on life forms and the concept of sustainable development. The concept of sustainable development which is by no means alien to scholars and students in the field of environmental protection, likewise conservation exists to posit a desirable feature for humans while trying to preserve and protect the environment from life damaging and general ecosystem destabilizing effects. The peculiarities existing in Nigeria’s race to achieve sustainable development in relation to its environment and safety of its citizens alike will be examined. The laxity/absence of laws of this effect will be highlighted from where it will be gleamed that some extant laws and policies which relate to many aspects of the environment in relation to the concept of sustainable development are outmoded and inadequate. These points will be emphasized particularly in the issues and challenges enveloping Nigeria’s pursuit of sustainable development. The major focus of this work will be to discuss the issue of sustainable development as it relates to Nigeria, a look into our environment and extant laws therein.
