ABSTRACT
This study investigates the impact of Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) disclosures on the financial performance of publicly listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria. Employing a quantitative research approach, data were collected from the annual reports, sustainability reports, and financial statements of 10 companies over the period from 2019 to 2023. The analysis was conducted using regression models to test the hypothesized relationships between ESG disclosures and financial performance.
The findings reveal a significant positive relationship between Environmental Disclosure and Financial Performance, indicating that companies engaging in robust environmental practices tend to experience enhanced financial outcomes. In contrast, Social Disclosure was found to negatively impact Financial Performance, suggesting that social responsibility efforts may not be immediately valued by investors in this sector. Corporate Governance Disclosure showed no significant relationship with Financial Performance, highlighting a potential disconnect between governance practices and short-term financial metrics.
These results underscore the importance of strategic communication and integration of sustainability initiatives. While environmental efforts are clearly beneficial, social disclosures require more effective strategies to demonstrate their value. Despite the lack of a direct financial impact, corporate governance remains crucial for long-term corporate integrity and stakeholder trust.
The study provides valuable insights for policymakers, corporate managers, and investors, advocating for a balanced approach to sustainability that aligns environmental stewardship with financial performance while refining social responsibility strategies to better articulate their long-term benefits. Further research is recommended to explore these dynamics across different industries and over extended periods to better understand the nuanced impacts of ESG disclosures.
