ABSTRACT

This study focused on the susceptibility and virulence factors of bacteria isolated from poultry and clinical sources. With the aid of a sterile universal bottles, poultry droppings were collected from three (3) different poultries houses; (Agric, New Benin, Ugbowo farm) and with the aid of a sterile universal bottles, urine samples were aseptically obtained from two undergraduate students and it were immediately transported to the laboratory for bacteriological analysis.  All the samples were analyzed within 24hrs of collection. Six sterile test tubes were labeled A, B C D E and F. With the aid of a sterile pipette, 9ml of sterile water was transferred into each test tube and 1g of poultry dropping was weighed and introduced into test tube A and serially diluted to test tube F. 1ml was plated from test tube D, E and F. It was then incubated at 370 C for 24hours. The procedure was repeated for other samples. The total bacteria count in poultry ranged from 6.3 × 105 CFU/ml - 7.4 × 105 CFU/ml while counts from the urine ranged from 7.2 × 105 CFU/ml - 8.5 × 105 CFU/ml. The prevalence of bacterial isolated from droppings and urine samples include; 27% Escherichia coli, 23% lactobacillus casei , 14% Staphylococcus aureus, and 9% Bacillus sp. While the prevalence in urine were 33% Escherichia coli,28% Staphylococcus aureus, 17% Klepsellia sp. 11% Proteus sp.  and 11% Pseudomonas sp. All the bacteria isolated; (Escherichia coli, lactobacillus casei, and Staphylococcus aureus)from droppings were ß-hemolytic, except from 9% Bacillus sp. While the bacteria isolated; (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klepsellia sp. Proteus sp.  and Pseudomonas sp.) from urine were ß-hemolytic. The bacteria isolated produced gelatinase except lactobacillus casei, Bacillus sp. and Salmonella sp.  All isolates were highly sensitive to ciprofloxacin 40(100%).
