ABSTRACT

This study was a survey on the problem hindering the effective teaching and learning of biology in senior secondary school in Ovia North East Local Government area of Edo State, two research questions were raised and one hypothesis which are outlined thus: What are the factors hindering the effective teaching and learning of biology in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State? What are teachers’ perceptions on the factors hindering the effective teaching and learning of biology in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State? There is no significant difference in teachers’ perception on the factors hindering the effective teaching and learning of biology in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State based on their qualification. The descriptive survey research design was used in this study. The population of the study comprised of thirty teachers (30) in the twenty-nine (29) public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample for the study consists of thirty teachers (30) drawn from secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the schools from the twenty-nine secondary schools in Ovia North East Government Area of Edo State. Data collected was analyzed using Cronbach’s alpha Statistics to obtained coefficient value of 0.72 was obtained. Frequency count and percentage mean and standard deviation was used to analyze the data. Hypothesis was tested using T-Test Findings form the study shown that non-availability of Biology textbooks in school library is one of the factors hindering the effective teaching and learning of biology in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was also revealed that insufficient Biology teachers in schools and dilapidated classrooms militate against the effective teaching of Biology and lack of science instructional materials in most secondary schools constrain the uses of instructional materials by Biology teachers. Finally, it was seen that there is no significant difference in teachers’ perception on the factors hindering the effective teaching and learning of Biology based on their qualification. It was also recommended that Government and school authority should make provision for availability of funds to buy necessary teaching aids for effective teaching of Biology.Government should ensure that qualified and welltrained Biology teachers were employed for effective teaching of the subject.
