ABTRACT

The study investigated the vocabulary learning strategies used by junior secondary schools students in Egor Local Government Area, Edo state. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. The descriptive survey research design was adapted for the study. The sample size for the study is  67 respondents drawn from five public schools in Egor Local Government. The structured questionnaire was used for the data collection for the study. The questionnaire was an adopted version of VLSs questionnaire proposed by Al-Fuhaid (2004) based on the VLSs taxonomies of Schmitt (1997) and Nation(2001). The questionnaire is made up of two sections, A and B. Section A contains demographical data of the respondents such as sex, and class. Section B is a 24–items likert instrument designed to collect data on the three different learning strategies used for vocabulary development by students. The questionnaire was administered and retrieved the questionnaire on the same day of administration. Data got ten from the study was analyzed using mean score and standard deviation. The research findings can be concluded that students have high level usage of vocabulary earning strategies and the consolidation strategies is the most highly used among the three strategies. It can be also be concluded that both male and female students have high use of these strategies.
