ABSTRACT

While complete treatment is unattainable, aathma can be effectively managed and controlled. A plant known as Adansonia digitata, a native of Africa and the Southern Arabian Peninsula has been claimed to affect the disease in a positive way.

This project attempts to assess the pharmacological activity of this plant due to claims of its potency in the treatment and management of asthma. Consequently, in order to induce respiratory discomfort and asthma symptoms, we acquired, fed, and sensitized a few Guinea pigs (animal model) with ovalbumin solution. After which the animal models were sacrificed and the level of Superoxide dismutase (SOD) level in the lung tissue of these animals were determined using the lungs obtained from the animals. The result showed no significant difference in (p>0.05) in superoxide dismutase level in the lung tissues of the animals that was sensitized with ovalbumin solution, exposed, and treated with Adansonia digitata when compared to the ones that no action was taken on (control) while there was significant difference between the animals that were exposed but not treated, and the control.
