ABSTRACT

Borehole siting suitability analysis is an important study for eradicating use of unsafe water because it because it identifies the best locations or regions within the area of interest, suitable for drilling boreholes to supply potable water. Use of unclean water from streams and other unsafe water sources is a big problem facing the rural areas most especially. And this problem cannot be solved until there is availability of safe and reliable potable water sources. This study aims to identify public borehole siting suitability zones for Illah, Oshimili North LGA, Delta State, using the multicriteria decision analysis approach, particularly the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method and GIS. Six conditioning parameters have been chosen to be factors that affect public borehole siting. These factors are: Geological condition of the area, Soil type, Distance to road network, Distance to residential areas, Elevation and slope. These factors were presented as raster dataset. These factors were then ranked based on their potential contribution to public borehole siting and given factor weights according to the AHP technique. The combination of these conditioning factors with their corresponding weights in the QGIS software resulted in the public borehole siting suitability map. From the suitability map, it was seen that 40% of the study area was characterized by very high suitability to site of public borehole.
