The study determined how subjective norms influence the entrepreneurial intentions of undergraduates in the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. Four (4) research questions were raised for the study out of which four (4) hypotheses were formulated. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised all 22,796 undergraduates in 100 – 400 levels in the Faculties selected for the study during 2021/2022 academic session. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 228 undergraduate students as sample for the study. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled Questionnaire on Subjective Norms and Entrepreneurial Intention of Undergraduate in the University of Benin” (QSNEIUUB). It was validated by four experts and its reliability was established at 0.87 using Cronbach Alpha method. The demographic data was presented in frequency tables and analyzed using percentages. Research questions 1-4 were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. All the hypotheses were tested using t-test statistics of two independent samples at 0.05 level of significance.
The findings revealed that family background,peer group, and religious leaders influenced the entrepreneurial intentions of students of University of Benin to a high extent while Lecturers/all the teachers influenced the entrepreneurial intentions of students to a low extent. Also, while male and female students do not differ significantly in their opinions on how family background and peer group influences their entrepreneurial intentions; they differ significantly in their opinions on how religious leaders and lectures/teachersinfluences their entrepreneurial intentions.
It was recommended among others that the universities entrepreneurship curriculum should be reviewed to go beyond the traditional teaching in schools. Teaching techniques that can motivate and also increasing students’ self-confidence should be adopted by Lecturers during entrepreneurship lectures. This implies the need to involve students in experimental training so as to motivate them to make entrepreneurial decisions after school.
