SUMMARY

Thus chapter summarizes the subjects of morality and hypocrisy of the novels, The Scarlet Letter and A Woman at Point Zero. Nathaniel Hawthorne and Nawal El Saadawi writes to depict the happenings in the Puritan and Egyptian society, showing how vain man can be though they claim to abide strictly to their religion principles.

After the introductory chapter, we begin chapter two by looking at the themes which is hypocrisy and morality in Puritan and Egyptian society. We identified the characters that are hypocritical and how they portrayed this attitude in their actions. We see that the major characters and the townspeople in The Scarlet Letter are people who portrayed this hypocrisy. We also see in A Woman at Point Zero that the male characters are pioneers of hypocrisy. This attitude does not tally in line with their religion as the society they live in seem to abide strictly to their religious codes.

In chapter three, we look at the characters and characterization in these books. In The Scarlet Letter, morality comes into play as the novel talks about sin- hidden and known- and its consequences. Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth, lives with the consequences of their sins daily till they died. Also, in A Woman at Point Zero, the morality behind this story is the negative effect of patriarchal society which leads to prostitution. Fridays as a case study, had to go through physical, emotional and mental abuse due to the sufferings she faces in a patriarchal society where men excessively use their superiority to oppress the women. Several instances also arise where she is bereft'of choice due to the domination of men in Egyptian society. She is left with no choice but to stick to prostitution.

In conclusion, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Nasal El Saadawi write their books to depict the attitudes of the people in the Puritan and Egyptian society.
