ABSTRACT

Sub-chronic toxicity is a harmful effect from repeated exposure to a substance occurring after 28 to 90 days. Sub-chronic toxicity studies typically involve exposing animals, most especially mice to a substance through various routes, such as oral ingestion, inhalation or dermal application. Icacina tricantha has been shown to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties (Asuzu and Abubakar 1995; Asuzu 1999; Eshowo 2010). However, no information was found about its subchronic toxicity. Therefore, this studies is aimed to investigate the sub-chronic toxicity of the ethanol extract of I.tricantha on the biochemical and histological parameters of the kidney in Wistar rats. A Stock solution of 120ml of I. tricantha extract was prepared. Twelve matured male wistar rats divided into four groups labelled (1A.2B.3B.4B) were used for this study. Group 1A was used as the control group and was not given any treatment. Group 2B was given 200mg/kg of the extract. 3B was given 500mg/kg of the extract, while 4B was given 1000mg/kg of the extract. The various dose was administered for a period of 28 days before sacrificing them. Blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis, assessing parameters such as creatinine, urea, bicarbonate and electrolyte levels. Kidney tissue samples were histologically examined for any potential morphological changes. The histological examination shows that I.tricantha has no damaging effect on the kidney as the examination of each group showed a normal tubule and glomeruli.
