ABSTRACT

This research investigated the subchronic toxicity of Funtumia elastica ethanolic extract and its influence on the biochemical and histological parameters of the liver in male Wistar rats. The study specifically examines the potential beneficial effects or side effects of the extract. The purpose was to assess liver function by evaluating various biochemical parameters such as liver enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP and GGT), total protein, albumin, bilirubin, and lipid profile. For a period of 28 days, 12 Male Wistar rats were placed into four groups with group one serving as the control group. These rats excluding those in group one were given the extract orally at different solutions. After the sasid time elapsed, the rats were sacrificed and blood samples collected from these already sacrificed rats via cardiac puncture. The biochemical parameters were gotten were analysed using serum gotten from the blood. The histological examinations of the liver showed vasodilation, normal hepatocytes and activation of Kupffer cells. This results indicate that Funtumia elastica could have hepatoprotective effects, possibly due to its bioactive components. In general, this research emphasizes the potentials of Funtumia elastica as a natural treatment for liver conditions as it has been used traditionally for the treatment of various ailments.
