ABSTRACT

Medicinal plants have the potentials to prevent, treat and manage acute and chronic diseases due to the high presence of phytochemicals. A. wilkesiana has a long history dating back to the early years of use in herbal medications and various pharmacological characteristics. This current study was aimed at evaluating the subacute toxicity of A. wilkesiana suggesting it may have a toxic or side effect on the liver functionality and some hepatic antioxidant of the male wistar rats after a period of time since studies suggests that this plant could be used as a supplement. Twenty-eight adult male wistar rats weighing between 1.0-1.6 kg were used for this study. the experimental rats were then randomized into 7 groups.1 control for methanol group,4 rats each for high dose, medium dose and low dose, then 1 control in Aqueous group,4 rats each for high dose, medium dose and low dose. All rats were between the weight ranges of 130g to 250g All rats. They were divided into 7 groups based on their weights. The rats were given their regular feed and water every morning and evening consistently. At the end of this study, animals were fasted overnight and sacrificed. Results from the biochemical assay showed no significant impact in the increase of electrolyte level when compared to normal control.
