ABSTRACT

The presence of impurities in greywater has long being a problem to the ever increasing global population. This research studies the potentials of an environmentally friendly technique for the removal of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solid (TSS) and Turbidity in municipal greywater using locally synthesized biochar.

50ml of greywater from Akanu Ibiam Hostel (Hall4) was contained in 5 beakers and was labeled bealker 1-5. 1g of biochar was added to beaker 1 and was stirred rigorously. This process was repeated with a steady increase of the biochar by 0.5g for all 5 beakers. A total adsorption time of 60min was required for the first experiment. After which it was observed that 1g of biochar in 50ml of greywater provided the best adsorption rate for all parameters recorded. This experiment was repeated but with a constant adsorbent mass of 1g for all beakers with a time variation of 10min, 20min, 30min, 40min, 60min for beaker 1, beaker 2, beaker 3, beaker 4, beaker 5 respectfully. This was done to monitor the effect of time on the rate of adsorption.

The results showed that time and adsorbent ratio had significant effect on the rate of adsorption. It can also be concluded, therefore, that biochar faired reasonably well in the adsorption of impurities from greywater and the treatment or remediation of greywatweer and should be adopted in the treatment of greywatwer especially for irrigation and domestic use.
