ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the potential protective effects of the aqueous extract of Cyperus esculentus on cadmium-induced alterations in plasma creatinine and urea levels in the kidney of a rat. Cadmium is a well-known nephrotoxic substance, and nephrotoxicity is one of the most prominent and concerning health effects associated with cadmium toxicity but the effect of Cyperus esculent aqueous extract on the plasma creatinine and urea levels of the kidney is unknown. A total of 35 healthy male albino Wistar rats were randomly assigned to five groups: a control group and four experimental groups. Cadmium chloride was administered to induce toxic effects, while the aqueous extract of Cyperus esculentus was administered in varying dose. The weights of the rats were monitored weekly over a 28-day period following an acclimatization phase. Statistical analysis revealed that the observed changes in plasma creatinine and urea levels in the experimental groups were not statistically significant when compared to the control group and the cadmium only group (p > 0.05). The null hypothesis was accepted. The findings of this study indicate that, under the conditions and parameters investigated, the aqueous extract of Cyperus esculentus did not demonstrate a statistically significant protective effect against cadmium-induced changes in plasma creatinine and urea levels in rats.
