ABSTRACT

Advancement in industries and technology amongst others resulted in the widespread use of heavy metals and consequently its bioaccumulation, owing to the fact that it is not biodegradable. Cadmium is one of such heavy metals that is largely dispersed in the environment and is taken up into biological systems where it accretes, exerting a plethora of toxic effects on human health. Cadmium's mechanistic approach to inducing toxicity is via ROS generation, weakening of the antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and oxidative stress. Long-term exposure can put one in the danger of kidney damage, lung and prostate cancer, amongst other health problems. Cyperus esculentus commonly referred to as "Tiger nuts" is replete with a profusion of nutrients and phytochemicals and has come to be recognized for its amazing antioxidant properties; diuretic effects, in that it increases urine production, ultimately helping the body eliminate cadmium more efficiently through the urine, thus reducing its accumulation in the kidneys; chelating properties, in that it contain minerals that can bind to cadmium ions, mitigating their toxicity and facilitating their elimination from the body. All these and many other renoprotective and remunerative potential make it an excellent ameliorant.
