ABSTRACT
Drilling operation efficiency is enhanced by the application of drilling mud constituted with suitable additives. This work investigates the use of waste palm bunch as an additive in the formulation of drilling mud for the enhancement of the pH and rheological properties of waterbased mud. A solution of waste palm bunch ash was formulated and drilling mud was formulated with and without this solution to check for its rheological properties. Analyses of the results revealed that the pH and rheological properties (apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity, yield point and gel strength) of the formulated water- based mud were relatively enhanced with the respective use of varying volumes of the waste palm bunch ash solution in comparison with the formulated drilling mud without the solution. The values obtained from the formulated drilling mud from different volumes of waste palm bunch ash solution was compared with that of a control mud without the solution and the mud pH was recorded from a pH meter to be 13.50, 13.71 and 13.97 for 2 ml, 4 ml and 6 ml respectively and this pH values when compared with that of the control mud of 9.02 indicates strongly that the mud pH was enhanced. Therefore, waste palm bunch can be used as additives to enhance or improve the pH and rheological properties of water-based mud.
