ABSTRACT
This study was designed to examine students use of school libraries in developing reading culture in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.
To guide this study four(4) research questions were raised. The survey research design was used in conducting the study and the population was two thousand five hundred and thirty-eight (2538) which comprised students in SSS2 of the thirteen public schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, while the sample was one hundred and seventy-two (172) SSS2 students. The instrument for the study was structured questionnaire. The validity of the instrument was established by giving the researcher's supervisor and two other experts in the field of the research study. The data obtained from the questionnaires were subjected to analysis using mean and Standard Deviation
The findings of the study based on the questions raised revealed the extent to which school libraries offer diverse and up-to-date collections of reading materials to cater for the diverse interests and reading levels of students. The study identified various teacher-driven initiatives and practices that contribute to promoting reading culture within the school environment. The study also revealed the various factors that hinder students from effectively utilizing school libraries for reading promotion. Lastly, the study found out the different strategies that can be implemented to maximize the potential of school libraries in nurturing a vibrant reading culture among secondary school students.
It was therefore recommended that there should be variety of reading and non reading materials in the school libraries, Teachers should include reading materials in their lessons, create a positive and supportive environment for discussing and sharing books. There should be adequate communication about reading programs and activities, hence erase the perception that libraries is only for academic purposes. Also, effective strategies should be implemented to maximize the potential of school libraries in nurturing a vibrant reading culture among secondary school students.
