STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVES ON THE INFLUENCE OF DISCUSSION METHOD IN TEACHING ENGLISH

ABSTRACT

This study investigates "Perception of Students on the Influence of Discussion Method in Teaching English Language in Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Benin-City, Edo State" . Data collected were analysed using "test-retest" method for the study. The population of the study consists of ten secondary schools in Oredo local government area of Benin-City, with the total population selection of hundred(100) students (ten students from each of the schools) The research instrument used for the study was questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into two sections. "Section A" was designed to generate personal information of the respondents, while "Section B" comprises of items in the topic being researched. It was constructed with care to reflect the problem of the study, such that the items would be relevant to the purpose of study. The instrument was reviewed and validated by the project supervisor from the Centre for Educational Technology in the University of Benin. Findings revealed that while the discussion method is a good method of teaching English language in secondary schools, from the students perspectives, some teachers lack the right ability to effectively guide discussions so as not to detail from the main purpose of the teaching. 18 Based on these findings, the following were recommended; That educators should undergo professional development, in order to familiarize themselves with discussion facilitation techniques. Also, curriculum designers should integrate discussion -based activities into lesson plans.
