STUDENTS PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF INTERNET FOR LEARNING BIOLOGY

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to investigate the students perception of the use of internet for learning Biology in University of Benin. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study.

 

The method adopted by the researcher is the descriptive survey research design. A review of related literature was carried out. A total of one hundred students in University of Benin constituted the population study sample. The instrument used for gathering data from the selected sample was a questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was established at 0.83 using Cronbach statistics. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics in form of percentages and mean.

 

The study revealed that, Student do not have access to laptops that will enable them access the internet, password and username to access school Wi-Fi to Mi-Fi, modern devices with subscription to access the internet. Student have access to android or iPhones devices that will enable them access the internet. Students feel that online teaching videos will make them learning faster, students feel that online based test (CBT) will make them learn faster. Students find relevant journals textbooks when they surf  the internet  Students find relevant online lesson videos when they surf  the internet, students find resent information when they Chat and communicate with other Biology students. It was recommended that; Network providers such as MTN, Globacom, Nine mobile Telecommunications Company and their collaborators should make it a priority to improve their network as well as reduce their tariff to enable students' purchase data at an affordable price. The university should build efficient cybercafé as well as provide internet facility within their premises and subscribe electronic scientific database. This will enable more access to the internet.
