ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to find out students’ perception on the influence of mother tongue on the learning of English Language in Junior Secondary Schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The design used for the study is the descriptive survey research method. The simple random sampling technique was used to select one hundred (100) students from the population. The researcher made use of a questionnaire to collect data for the study. The instrument was tagged “Questionnaire on Students’ Perception on the Influence of Mother Tongue on the Learning of English Language”. The data was analyzed on tables showing frequencies and percentages. From the study, findings revealed that majority of students in Benin communicate at home, but some schools within the local government area restrict students from speaking other languages in school aside from the English Language. In line with findings from the study, it was recommended that curriculum planners and other educational stakeholders should ensure they include mother tongue learning to the curriculum. It was also recommended that workshops, seminars and conferences should be organized to further groom teachers on the importance of mother tongue in teaching pedagogy.
