STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THE IMPACT OF CHILD ABUSE ON LEARNING IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN IKPOBA OKHA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study examined factors that contributed to a student's perception of child abuse in selected secondary schools in the Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of ​​Edo State. The purpose of this study was to assess the extent or extent of the impact of child abuse on the student learning process and its causes. The study was conducted using a correlation survey. The study was guided by four research questions and four drawings were tested and evaluated. The sample consists of 384 students selected from five public high schools in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area in Edo State. A total of 351 students representing 98% were selected as a sample of this study

The instrument for data collection was questionnaire composed of 25 items. Descriptive statistics parameters include percentage, standard deviation and mean which were used in answering the research questions while the research hypotheses were tested using the Pearson’s product method correlation coefficient r. The result showed that the familiar and common types of child abused such as bully, rape, child neglect and maltreatment etc. to students and learning process, negatively affects their learning and performance in academics. Child abuse factors where seen to result from four (4) must reinforce their effort at ensuring that acceptable moral training and learning/which are as follows, parents based, teacher based, student based and government based factors. Possible remedies to curb child abuse in secondary schools includes both home and school environments should be made conducive for learning, education orientation and behavior-accountability policy implementation. Recommendations made in this work are that government, educators, policy makers, school administrators and parents / guidance should ensure that appropriate measures are put in place and provided to schools for effective learning and physical education. Moral education/instruction bodies and also parenting / guidance must be strengthened by their efforts to ensure that good training and learning process is provided to the child
