ABSTRACT

The study investigated the knowledge of HIV/AIDS and their sexual practices of students in the University of Benin, Benin- city Area of Edo State. The study reviewed related literature on Students’ knowledge of HIV/AIDS and their sexual practices. Eight research questions and four hypothesis were raised to guide the study.

A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Data was collected from 100 students across five (5) faculties out of fifteen (15) faculties in University of Benin by using purposive sampling method to select Faculty of Education and then simple random sampling to select four (4) more faculties. A structured questionnaire titled Students’ knowledge of HIV/AIDS and their sexual practices was used for data collection, and analysis employed simple percentage, standard deviation and mean calculations.

Findings revealed that students at the University of Benin are well-informed about HIV/AIDS, including its transmission, prevention, and treatment. However, students have misconceptions about the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to child during pregnancy and prevention of HIV/AIDS by avoiding sharing of needles and syringes which needs to be addressed. The students engage in various sexual practices and exhibit a permissive attitude towards premarital sex. Peer influence and social media play significant roles in shaping their sexual behaviors and attitudes. The study found no significant differences in knowledge, sexual practices, or attitudes based on sex. Based on the findings of the study the following recommendations are made: Universities should implement comprehensive sexual health education programs, leveraging peer influence positively through trained educators and using social media to counteract risky norms. Accessible HIV testing and counseling services should be provided, alongside regular workshops and seminars. Collaboration with health organizations can bring expert knowledge and resources, while integrating sexual health education into the curriculum ensures all students receive critical information.
