ABSTRACT
This study is aimed at assessing student’s indiscipline and failure among secondary school students in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. Data was collected from two hundred and fifty (250) respondents which made up the entire sample population. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using mean score and standard deviation. Criterions mean score of 2.50 was used as selection criterion.
The findings from the study include that some of the frequent and regular types of indiscipline in secondary Schools in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State include; disobedience to school authority, stealing money from home, absenteeism, poor studying habit, wearing dirty and wrong uniforms.It was concluded that that some of the factors constituting students indiscipline and failure in secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area entails teachers’ lateness and absenteeism, poor teaching by some teachers, parental overprotection of children, abuse of seniority by prefects and lack of extra-curricular activities. The researcher also concluded that the possible ways in which students indiscipline and failure among secondary school students in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State can be curbed include moral leadership and education, School authorities to be good model, involvement of students in making rules and regulations, reduction of class size, high parental and school supervision and counseling.
Some of the recommendations made include that school administrators, teachers and parents should reduce indiscipline through increased supervision. It was also recommended that moral punishment, rewards, praise and blame create room for reinforcement of positive performance which is the guideline for the impulsiveness of the students.
