ABSTRACT

The study was designed to investigate the impact of students’ characteristics on the academic performance of senior secondary schools in randomly selected schools in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State. Investigate the level of secondary school students’ academic performance in Egor L.G.A. of Edo state. Examine the variation in academic performance between male and female students, the variation in academic performance between old and young students, find out the variation in academic performance between urban and rural students and examine the variation in academic performance between intact and separate home

Stratified random technique sampling was used to select schools for the study. Two hundred (200) students registered from four (4) selected public senior secondary schools were used to carry out the study. The item on the checklist was developed based on the objectives of the study. Data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative method where descriptive statistics including mean, frequency, percentages as well as standard deviation were used.

The findings of the study shows that the study exposes that the level of secondary school academic performance in Egor local government area is to a high extent and that female grade is higher than their male counterpart. The researcher therefor recommend that Schools should recognize that students have diverse learning styles, backgrounds, and abilities. Implement individualized learning plans that cater to eir specific needs and strengths. This may include differentiated instruction, personalized learning pathways, and accommodations for students with special needs and that government can implement early assessment tools to identify students who may be at risk of underperforming academically. Provide targeted interventions and support for these students to address their specific challenges promptly.
