ABSTRACT
This study was designed to ascertain students’ attitude toward the study of Basic Science in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. Two (2) research questions were raised and one hypothesis to guide the study. The study adopted survey research design. The population of the study consisted of six thousand, nine hundred and eighty five (6,985) students from fourteen (14) secondary schools in Oredo LGA of Edo State. Two hundred (200) students formed the sample of the study. They were randomly sampled to ensure fair representation.
The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire titled “QUESTIONNAIRE on STUDENTS’ ATTITUDE TOWARD THE STUDY OF BASIC SCIENCE (QSATSBS)” (r = 0.74). Data obtained from the instrument were analysed using frequency count, simple percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test.
Findings revealed that students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State have positive attitude toward their learning of Basic Science. Also, Basic Science teachers’ competence, method of teaching and attitudes towards teaching affects students’ attitudes toward the subject. It was also discovered that there is a significant difference in male and female students’ attitude toward the study of Basic Science. It was recommended among others that Teachers, school administrators, parents, and the community should support students developing positive attitude toward Basic Science, by addressing all the issues that affect their attitude toward the subject and laboratories should be made available and functional so that students positive attitude toward Basic Science can be sustained.
