ABSTRACT

This research project delves into the intricate landscape of student attitudes towards the electoral process at the University of Benin (UNIBEN). It seeks to uncover the factors that influence their participation or non-participation in student elections, aiming to provide valuable insights into the democratic engagement of the academic community. Methodologically, a mixed-methods approach is employed. Questionnaire and interviews are used to collect data from a diverse and representative sample of UNIBEN students. These methods offer a multifaceted view of student attitudes and allow for a nuanced exploration of the topic. Data analysis is conducted meticulously, involving both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Statistical analysis examines the relationship between various factors such as socioeconomic background, prior political engagement, and perceptions of the electoral process. The findings reveal a complex interplay of factors influencing student attitudes towards the electoral process at UNIBEN. While some students exhibit high levels of enthusiasm and engagement, others remain apathetic or skeptical about the process. The implications of these findings are multifaceted. They shed light on the unique dynamics of student engagement in the electoral process within the academic environment. This research project contributes to the broader understanding of student attitudes towards electoral processes in Nigerian universities. It underscores the need for tailored interventions that address the specific concerns and motivations of students at UNIBEN. By fostering a sense of ownership and participation in the electoral process, the university can play a pivotal role in shaping future leaders who are actively engaged in democratic processes. The insights generated by this study hold the potential to not only benefit UNIBEN but also serve as a reference point for similar institutions seeking to strengthen democratic values and practices among their student bodies.
