ABSTRACT
Waste disposal is an important aspect when it comes to promoting and protecting our environment. Proper waste disposal is vital for a healthy and safe environment. The aim of this study therefore, was to assess students attitudes and practices towards proper waste disposal using the students of Environmental Education of the Department of Health Safety And Environmental Education, University Of Benin, Edo State. The research design is a descriptive type of Survey design and the study population consisted of a total population of 310 students. A sample size of 93 students were selected using a random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a well-designed structured questionnaire which was validated by the project Supervisor and two other lecturers from the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental education. Collated data was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as frequency and percentage tables. The study revealed that the students are knowledgeable about the implication of improper waste disposal and have positive attitudes towards waste disposal. It also revealed that majority of the respondents are influenced by their peers attitudes and practices towards waste disposal, while some of them lack the knowledge of proper waste disposal practices and the majority of them agree that keeping the environment clean is also their responsibility. It is thus recommended that proper awareness campaigns and comprehensive environmental education show be employed in improving students attitudes and practices towards proper waste disposal.
