ABSTRACT
Student academic performance at any institution influences the school’s overall success, hence it is critical for teachers and tutors to develop a proactive strategy to curtail or end the widespread failure of students. However, in this project work the prediction of students academic performance has been proposed using the decision tree method, also identified the factors affecting students’ performance and it was determined that student’s prior academic performance is the most important of various factors and this was used in the decision tree prediction. This study demonstrated how prior academic performance of students may be used to build a decision tree algorithm model that can be used to forecast students’ success.
The decision tree method of predicting students’ academic performance was recommended for institutions, teachers and students to assist in predicting future academic performance of students and to assist in identifying the factors that hinder students’ success, as the decision tree method is easy to understand, has clarity, relatively low cost and great for making decisions.
