ABSTRACT
Radio has further demonstrated its significance in nation-building as a social institution. The radio is so important in everyone’s lives that you will barely not find any in various homes in our country. It has continued to prove that it is not just A medium for communication, but also entertainment and a tool for exercising national development. Democracy, which consists of freedom of political participation of people, to be able to select and choose what they want and who they want to represent their interests seems to be losing its value, but in a few ways, the radio has also influenced this by encouraging and promoting political participation. Most citizens in Nigeria due to the neglect from leaders now serves as spectators and bystanders rather than active partakers in democracy. The intent of this research therefore, is to know how well, the major roles the radio medium plays in promoting participate three democracy, using the students perception as a case study. (Students of the University of Benin, Ekehuan Campus). The findings reveals that radio, plays an essential role in promoting Participatory Democracy in Nigeria, but is losing its values due to the rise of various new media, and social media, of which engages more of the younger generation, but gradually taking over the older generation, but without a doubt is a strong catalyst for promoting Participatory Democracy in Nigeria.
