ABSTRACT

This study explores the relationship between stress management and employee performance among academic staff in the Faculty of Management Sciences at the University of Benin, Benin City. Specifically, it investigated how workload, role conflict, and role ambiguity impact academic staff performance. A survey research design was adopted, with a sample of 115 academic staff members receiving structured questionnaires. Out of the distributed questionnaires, 111 valid responses were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, with all tests conducted at a 5% significance level using SPSS version 20. Findings indicate a positive and significant relationship between workload, role ambiguity, and employee performance. Conversely, the relationship between role conflict and academic staff performance is negative and not statistically significant. It is recommended that the University of Benin management provides better support in task assessment and allocation based on employees' skills and workloads. Additionally, continuous learning opportunities and training should be offered to help staff manage their tasks more efficiently. Regular check-ins and performance reviews should be conducted to monitor employees' workloads and stress levels, aiming to enhance overall performance.
