ABSTRACT
This study investigated the factors contributing to stress among students at the University of Benin. It analyzed the various types of stress and how they are influenced by demographic characteristics such as gender, academic level, and faculty type. This study also explored the strategies and mechanisms employed by students to manage and cope with stress in their academic environment.
The population comprised of registered students at the University of Benin, using a convenience sample of 394 students from 15 Faculties in the university of Benin. The Instrument of data collection was a questionnaire. The data was compiled and analysed with statistical tools like mean, t-test and ANOVA (Analysis of variance), using Microsoft Excel and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software .
The study revealed no significant association between gender and stress, it also revealed a statistically significant association between stress and university students, with three types of stress identified; academic, financial and social. We therefore recommend that educators and counsellors should focus on providing individualized support and stress management techniques. Also that, open communication should be encouraged to enable students feel comfortable discussing their stress and anxiety, without fear of judgment or stereotyping.
