ABSTRACT

The thesis titled “Strategies of lexical borrowing from English to Edo language” is a documentation of some English based loan words in Edo. The study was propelled by the following observation .

that a large part of the vocabulary of the Edo words are loaned word from Other language particularly the English language , that these loan words are basically as a result of new designation, that these loan words have been nativized and are generally used by the Edo speakers.

This work is therefore aimed at finding out the extent to which the Edo language  has borrowed from the English language and analyzing how the loan words undergo such phonological change in the course of nativizing them. The study adopted the quantitative method of research design.

The data for the study was collected through personal interviews and interaction with the native speaker of the language and also from personal intuition as a native speaker of the language .The study also adopted secondary method of data collection whereby articles, textbooks ,journals and electronic media were made use of. The researcher discovered that there are very many English loan word in a Edo language and that in the course of this nativizing  these loan word, their experience adjustment in line with the morpho phonemic rules of the Edo language.
