STRATEGIES FOR WIDENING WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME IN BENIN METROPOLIS

ABSTRACT

The general purpose of this study is to assess the strategies for widening women participation in skills development programmes in Benin metropolis. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, five research questions were raised to guide the study. The research design adopted for this study was the survey method. The population of the study consists of women living in Benin city. The sample for this study will consist of 350 women living in Benin city currently enrolled in skills development programs or who are interested in enrolling in such programs, selected from the population using a simple random sampling technique. Questionnaire was used as one of the instrrument for data collection. The questionnaire was categorized into three sections: Section A, Section B and Section C. Section A is an introductory letter of the researcher, B obtained information on the personal data of the respondents while Section C elicited information on the digital literacy gap and strategies to bridge its learners' using university of benin part-time students as a case study. The instrument was validated by three lecturers from the faculty of Education. Corrections were made by the lecturers after going through the instrument. the equally examined the relationship of the instrument with the problem under study. A test-retest reliability was used to establish the reliability of the instrument. The instrument was administered on 50 respondents from benin city that were not included in the respondents within the research sample. The reliability of the rating scale was estimated using cronbach's alpha coefficient method. Data collected were analyzed using arithmetic mean and percentage in order to answer the research question. The interpretation of research question were done based on percentage.  The study identified effective strategies for promoting women's participation, including awareness campaigns, gender-sensitive training design, flexible training schedules, childcare support, mentorship programs, inclusive marketing, policy reforms, collaboration with women's organizations, and capacity building for trainers. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that implementing these strategies to promote gender equality and empower women through skills development programs amongst others.
