STATUS OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT WITHIN COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, UGBOWO CAMPUS

ABSTRACT

Solid waste management is a pressing issue with significant environmental, health, and economic implications. The aim of this study is to analyze the status of solid waste management in commercial environments within the University of Benin, Ugbowo campus. Four commercial environments under study were administered 200 questionnaires which were pretested, well structured and refined. The result of this findings showed that (51%) of respondents are male while (49%) are female. 54.5% of respondents were single and (39%) were married. Data from this study shows that about (69%) of respondents have attained secondary education while (27.5%) have attained tertiary education. Paper waste had the highest percentage (80.5%), followed by plastic waste (79.5%), organic waste (69%), glass bottles (19%), textile waste (17%), metal (15.5%) and wood (2%). Waste basket (80%) appears to be the principal means through which respondents collect their waste followed by plastic bags (46%), carton (41.5%) and drum (29%). About half the percentage (44.5%) opined to dump their waste on open dump within the university environment while 24.5% of respondents ticked Yes to compliance of waste sorting as majority (75.5%) of respondents ticked No. Data from this study showed that 65.5% of respondents opined that the state of public bins within the University of Benin are not in a good state, 38.5% opined that public bins within the university are in a good state, 27% said the public bins were rusting/rotting while 14.5% Didn't know. Respondents Strongly Agree (35%) and Agree (26%) that lack of service quality was responsible for poor solid waste management, as 32% of the respondents were Undecided. About 26.5% of respondents said that the condition of the university environment has been much better in the last five years, 36.5% said it is a little better, 35% said it was the same while 2% said it was a little worse. Institutions within the Nigeria may take the lead in promoting a more sustainable and environmentally sensitive future by utilizing obtainable solutions from evidence base study.
