STATE SECURITY OUTFITS AS TACTICAL SUPPORT TEAM FOR NATIONAL SECURITY; A STUDY OF EDO STATE SECURITY NETWORK (ESSN) NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This research work sought to examine the state security outfits as tactical support team for national security; A study of Edo state security network (ESSN). The study made use of questionnaire to obtain data from respondent. Four objectives were raised for the study. The study found that Edo State Security Network was formed as a military arm for the protection of citizens . This implies that the Vigilante does not undermine the sovereignty of Nigeria. The federal government saw the formation of Vigilante as threat even in turbulent times such as these, when the blood of innocent and hapless citizens are being spilled on the streets and bushes by terrorists, kidnappers, etc., the only alternative to complete legalizations of self help with its possible fearful outcomes, would be the registering of proper communal/state/regional bodies, that are within the purview of the law to assist the central police in the preservation and protection of lives and property. The study concluded that the overall national interest of providing security and protecting the interest of the Nigerian public should suffice to guide decision makers since there are potential threats that should be addressed as soon as identified and thus recommended that The State Governments should deploy funds for the running of the regional outfits set up by them for the communal defense of their citizens.
