ABSTRACT
State House of Assemblies is crucial components of democratic development, serving as a platform for the representation of the people and the enactment of laws that govern their daily lives. This study seeks to explore the role of State House of Assemblies as a tool for democratic development, using Edo State House of Assembly as a case study from 2019 – 2021. This study shall employ a qualitative research design, using a combination of primary and secondary data sources, including interviews with key stakeholders, analysis of legislative documents, and review of related literature. The findings of the study reveal that the Edo State House of Assembly played a pivotal role in advancing democratic development in Edo State during the period under review. The House of Assembly demonstrated its commitment to democratic principles by ensuring transparency and accountability in its legislative processes, enacting laws that protect the rights and welfare of the citizens, and providing oversight functions over the executive arm of the government. However, the study also identifies some challenges faced by the Edo State House of Assembly, including limited resources, political interference, and lack of capacity building for lawmakers. These challenges, if left unaddressed, could undermine the effectiveness of the House of Assembly in promoting democratic development in the state. In conclusion, the study recommends that the Edo State House of Assembly should prioritize capacity building for lawmakers, enhance public participation in legislative processes, and strengthen its overnight functions over the executive arm of government to further promote democratic development in the state.
