ABSTRACT

This work was done so as to standardize distilled water samples sold in Benin City. Samples of distilled water were collected from the department of Chemistry ,UNIBEN, Pyrex IG and Nwaeze electrical system . The pH, conductivity and trace metal levels were used to assess the samples. The pH of the different samples were ascertained by the use of a pH meter . The following arc the values of the pH of distilled water samples in Benin city: department of Chemistry, UNIBEN = 6.7 ,Pyrex=6.6 , Nwaeze E.S= 7.3. A conductivity meter was used to determine the conductivity of the different samples: department of Chemistry, UN1BEN=4.29 pS/cm at 25.1°c ,Pyrex =2.18pS/cm at 25°c , Nwaeze E.S= 99.90pS/cm at 27.1°c. Finally, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy ( AAS) was used to analyse for the presence of heavy metals such as Iron , Lead , Cadmium , Copper , Nickel . In conclusion, the pH of samples collected from the department of Chemistry, UNIBEN & Pyrex were seen to be slightly acidic in conformance to standard while samples gotten from Nwaeze E.S were seen to slightly alkaline, deviating from standard.
