STAFF RECRUITMENT AS PREDICTOR OF SCHOOL OUTCOME IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

This study investigate teachers’ perception on staff recruitment in secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The study also determined teachers’ perception on the influence of ethnicity, qualification, experience, and favouritism on staff recruitment in secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.  Four research questions guided the study and four hypotheses, which was tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The study adopted the correlational research design. The instrument used for the study was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated by three experts and then administered on 30 respondents to test for its reliability. The Cronbach Alpha statistics was used to determine the reliability of the instrument and the value of 0.871 was obtained which implied that the instrument was reliable in carrying out the study. The population of the study consisted of 598 teachers from secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area with a sample size of 150 teachers representing 25% of the population. The data collected in the study was analyzed using mean, standard deviation and simple linear regression. The findings of the study showed that; there was a significant relationship between staff recruitment and ethnicity; there was a significant relationship between staff recruitment and qualification; there was a significant relationship between staff recruitment and experience; there was a significant relationship between staff recruitment and favouritism in secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that school administrators and the government should implement diversity training programs for all staff involved in recruitment processes and also ensure to establish clear and transparent selection criteria for recruitment decisions.
