ABSTRACT
Plastic waste is a big issue in Nigeria. In Nigeria, we have challenges of recurring economic recession and this can have effect on many aspects of life including construction. Road construction is now very costly. In order to reduce the pollution caused by plastic waste, the plastic waste can be used with other construction materials to construct better and more durable roads. In this study, the geotechnical properties of lateritic soil, silty soil and clayey soil were obtained and the effect of the addition of plastic in proportions of 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% to the three soil types was observed. The lateritic soil samples were obtained from University of Benin, Edo State. The silty soil samples were obtained at Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Limited, Ologbo Community, Edo State. The clayey soil samples were obtained from Benin-Sagamu Expressway, Edo State. Laboratory tests were carried out to evaluate the suitability of these three soil types. Bulk Density, Atterberg limit, Specific gravity, Sieve analysis and the strength tests: Compaction test and California bearing ratio test were conducted on the three soil types alone and also with plastic as a stabilizer in order to determine the suitability as sub base material.
